When you’re starting out gardening there seems to be a daunting array of equipment on offer!

You can often pick up garden tools on Freecycle. Old tools can be perfectly usable. I have gardened with a 3 pronged fork before and it’s fine!

These are the basic things you will need.

  • Spade (or spade and fork set)
  • Fork
  • Trowel (or trowel and secateurs set)
  • Secateurs
  • Gloves

Not essential but useful:

  • Shears
  • Soil Rake

In my view cheap garden tools aren’t worth buying. They will break quickly.

Best to spend a bit of money on something that will last, or try to get some second hand.
